Divide the number of campers by the number needed for each boat.

Now think about the remainder. The answer is either 8 or 9.

Multiply:

6 × 8 = 48

6 × 9 = 54

8 boats (48 campers) is correct. 9 boats (54 campers) is too many. The group will be able to carry 8 boats.
