An outlier is an extreme value in a data set that is either much larger or much smaller than all the other values.

To find the outlier, look for the value that is either much larger or much smaller than all the other values. The value 502 is an outlier because it is much larger than all other values.

If 502 were removed from the data set, the rest of the smaller values would remain. If you calculated the mean of these smaller values, you would find it to be less than the original mean.

So, removing the outlier causes the mean to decrease.
