Subtract:

^–4 − ^–1 =

Subtracting a negative is the same as adding a positive.

You can add numbers in either order.

Change the negative sign and the minus sign to a plus sign:

^–4 − ^–1 = ^–4 + 1

Now you are adding, so you can switch the order of the numbers:

^–4 + 1 = 1 + ^–4

Change the negative sign to a subtraction sign:

1 + ^–4 = 1 − 4

Since 4 is bigger than 1, the answer will be negative.

First solve an easier problem:

4 − 1 = 3

Remember that the answer to the problem you're solving will be negative:

1 − 4 = ^–3

So:

^–4 − ^–1 = ^–3
