How would the mean change if the number 88 were added to the set?

The mean is the average of the numbers. You find the mean by adding the numbers together and then dividing by the number of numbers in the group.

Find the original mean. There are 6 numbers. Add up the numbers and divide by 6.

(84 + 98 + 66 + 92 + 31 + 31) ÷ 6 = 67

The original mean is 67.

Now include the 7^th number (88) and find the new mean. Add up the numbers and divide by 7.

(84 + 98 + 66 + 92 + 31 + 31 + 88) ÷ 7 = 70

The new mean would be 70.

The mean would increase from 67 to 70.
